GLP-1 medications have become a major part of the conversation around weight management and health. But behind the headlines and statistics are real people with real stories, each navigating their own health, fitness, and wellness journey.
For this story, we sat down with Molly Connor, a Shredder at Shred415 Indy, to hear about her experience firsthand.
Molly’s journey to Shred415 wasn’t a straight line. After years of high-intensity training and completing several half marathons, she experienced significant thyroid-related health challenges that changed her relationship with fitness and led to substantial weight gain.
As she approached 50, Molly began exploring her options with her physician and ultimately started a GLP-1 medication. About a year into that journey, she joined Shred415 with a goal that went beyond the number on the scale: she wanted to rebuild her strength, support her overall health, and feel like herself again.
Since then, Molly has continued to show up, putting strength training, cardio, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and community at the center of her fitness journey.
Today, she has lost a significant amount of weight and says she feels stronger and healthier than ever. But perhaps more importantly, she’s found a fitness community that has helped her stay committed to herself along the way.
We asked Molly the questions many people considering or already using GLP-1 medications may be wondering: What was it like starting exercise again? What surprised her? How did she approach fueling and hydration? And what role did strength training play in her journey?

1. Tell us a little about yourself and what first brought you to Shred415.
After spending four years at another HIIT gym and completing a few half marathons, my thyroid crashed (unrelated) and I worked through a few years of an autoimmune thyroid drama. Once that was healed, I knew I needed to get back to a HIIT regimen, but needed a change. My friends Darrick and Cara had been trying to sell me on Shred415 forever and I finally decided the timing was right!
2. What made you decide to start taking a GLP-1 medication, and what were your goals?
When my thyroid crashed, I quickly gained 50 pounds (and 20 more from being sad and anxious about the 50!). As turning 50 approached, I knew how challenging it would be to get out from behind the eight ball on my own and had an incredible chat with my physician about my options. She was so encouraging about the other benefits of the GLP-1 (cholesterol, cardio and liver health, inflammation, sleep, blood pressure) that it was a no brainer. I had no hesitations at all and so much support as I found the right diagnosis.
3. Were you already a member at Shred415 when you started your GLP-1 journey, or did you join afterward?
I was about a year into the journey when I joined Shred415, and the bone density/muscle mass was a big factor in getting back to the gym. I was losing weight, but wanted to get back to being strong, for vanity purposes, but also to optimize and support the work that the GLP-1 was doing! It’s been a perfect combination.
4. What was your biggest concern about exercising while taking a GLP-1 medication?
My only hesitation was that I wasn’t eating enough to support the workouts at the start. But truth be told, I quickly learned that my hard workouts were just what I needed to ensure that I was fueling (AND hydrating) correctly. They’ve really gone hand in hand to fuel my body and I’m feeling better than ever!
5. How did the Shred415 instructors help you adjust your workouts during those first few weeks?
Since it had been a few years since I’d worked out, going at my own pace and refinding my groove were a priority to me. The focus on getting strong was a priority to me and the workouts were perfectly designed to get started where I could and challenge myself as the weeks went on.
6. What changes have you noticed since combining GLP-1 medication with regular Shred415 workouts?
In my first year on the GLP-1, I lost about 30 pounds. After 13 months at Shred415, I’m down an additional 50 pounds, for 80 pounds overall. As of today, I’ve lost 34% of my body weight! These workouts have helped me prioritize fueling my body with good food, hydrating, and leaning into better sleep hygiene. It also feels so good to see the better-than-ever version of me in the mirror when I’m lifting. I’ve also been able to adjust my anxiety and depression meds to the lowest doses knowing that I’m in control of my health and my body is doing its best work!
7. Has anything surprised you about your journey that you weren’t expecting?
When I first started this journey, I wanted to lose quickly (of course!), but two years in… I am so glad that I’ve done it slowly and with the help of strength training. I’ve been able to avoid side effects and loose skin to really look and feel my absolute best! Also, I have absolutely fallen in love with the community at Shred415. It’s so fun to celebrate my wins with the coaches and community!
8. What keeps you coming back to Shred415?
The community: 100%. While it’s not always easy to get out of bed to get my butt there, it’s always worth it. The coaches, the people, the playlists, and the incredible vibe are just irreplaceable!
9. What advice would you give someone who’s nervous about starting exercise while taking a GLP-1 medication?
I wouldn’t take a GLP-1 without some type of strength training. While I was doing yoga on the front half of my journey, pivoting back to the HIIT workouts at Shred415 was an absolute game changer for the weight-loss journey. Leaning into what we know now about how critical it is to support the medication with strength training will only set you up for success… on the scale, the weight floor, and with your mental health. And I promise, the benefits you’ll see in your blood work are their own dopamine hit!
10. Looking back, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your GLP-1 and fitness journey?
Advocate for yourself. If you’re struggling, find a doctor who will help you and who you trust. There is no shame in using medication to help you feel your best (I always say that I wear glasses to see better and inhaler to breathe better… and this is no different). The difference between taking the meds with and without strength training and cardio is night and day. A beautiful life is on the other side of continuing to show up for yourself!
Molly’s Biggest Takeaway: Keep Showing Up
Molly’s GLP-1 journey has been about much more than weight loss.
For her, medication became one part of a much bigger approach to her health. Returning to exercise, rebuilding strength, paying attention to nutrition and hydration, prioritizing sleep, and surrounding herself with an encouraging community have all played a role.
Her biggest lesson?
Advocate for yourself and keep showing up for yourself.
Molly’s experience is uniquely her own, and everyone’s response to GLP-1 medication and exercise will be different. But her story is a reminder that taking care of your health doesn’t have to mean choosing between medication, movement, or lifestyle changes. With appropriate medical guidance, people can explore the tools that are right for them while continuing to build strength, fitness, and healthy habits.
For Molly, Shred415 Indy has become an important part of that process.
The coaches. The workouts. The people. The playlists. The accountability. The community.
And, most importantly, a place that keeps her showing up.
As Molly puts it, a beautiful life can be on the other side of continuing to show up for yourself.
Thank you, Molly, for sharing your story with the Shred415 community.
